Warcross – Marie Lu

Goodreads synopsis: The obsession started ten years ago and its fan base now spans the globe, some eager to escape from reality and others hoping to make a profit. Struggling to make ends meet, teenage hacker Emika Chen works as a bounty hunter, tracking down Warcross players who bet on the game illegally. But the bounty hunting world is a competitive one, and survival has not been easy. To make some quick cash, Emika takes a risk and hacks into the opening game of the international Warcross Championships—only to accidentally glitch herself into the action and become an overnight sensation.

Convinced she’s going to be arrested, Emika is shocked when instead she gets a call from the game’s creator, the elusive young billionaire Hideo Tanaka, with an irresistible offer. He needs a spy on the inside of this year’s tournament in order to uncover a security problem . . . and he wants Emika for the job. With no time to lose, Emika’s whisked off to Tokyo and thrust into a world of fame and fortune that she’s only dreamed of. But soon her investigation uncovers a sinister plot, with major consequences for the entire Warcross empire.

Wow! I’m impressed by this book, it’s well written and the plot is complex. The theme, technoligy in the future, is new for me. Most of the time it doesn’t interest me too much, it gets kinda boring and confusing. But none of those words describs this book.

When it comes to the characters I must say Hideo Tanaka was one of my absolute favorites in the beginning. He was confusing and didn’t seem to trust anyone, so young in age but so old in mind. Just how mysterious he was and how little you knew about him. That was amazing!!

The ending of this book was unexpected (I’ll write more about the ending in the review with spoilers) and good. Suddenly you had no idea what to think anymore or who was trustworthy. I love that about books, when your entire ground falls apart and you’ve to rethink everything, it often makes the plot better.

There was this one thing I missed in this book, how did Emika and Keira first meet? Maybe Lu writes more about it in the next book but I would’ve loved to read about their background history.

Every looked door has a key, Every problem has a solution.

Emika Chen

Everything is science fiction until someone makes it science fact.

Hideo Tanaka, ch. 8

It is hard to describe loss to someone who has never experienced it, impossible to explain all the ways it changes you. But for those who have, not a single word is needed.

Emika Chen, kap. 23

But beauty can make people forgive a thousand cruelties.

Emika Chen, ch. 27

English review WITH SPOILERS

Can we discuss the ending? It was very interesting (I use that word very often, don’t I?) and took a unexpected turn even if the fact that Sasuke turned out to be alive didn’t surprise me. It felt sensible to me but how is Emika going to handle it? Haven’t read the second book in the Warcross series yet but I can’t wait to see (read) her next move. Hideo or Sasuke? Who’s she going to help to take down the other? That’s what I can’t wait for, I do have a guess though. (:

Something I hope to read more about in Wildcard is how Roshan and Tremaine met, it’s obvious they’ve known each other in some way. I really liked Tremaine, can’t tell why though. I just hope to see more of him!

Favorite character: Hideo

Wow!

Emika Chen, ch. 27

Svensk recension MED SPOILER

I know, Hideo is very odd (in a good way) but right know I don’t know what to think of him. I mean, the ending? What happened to that genius? Still love him though. Can’t wait for the second book!! Think I’ll buy it very soon, reeeally can’t wait!
