Wildcard – Marie Lu

Goodreads synopsis: Emika Chen barely made it out of the Warcross Championships alive. Now that she knows the truth behind Hideo’s new NeuroLink algorithm, she can no longer trust the one person she’s always looked up to, who she once thought was on her side.

Determined to put a stop to Hideo’s grim plans, Emika and the Phoenix Riders band together, only to find a new threat lurking on the neon-lit streets of Tokyo. Someone’s put a bounty on Emika’s head, and her sole chance for survival lies with Zero and the Blackcoats, his ruthless crew. But Emika soon learns that Zero isn’t all that he seems–and his protection comes at a price.

Caught in a web of betrayal, with the future of free will at risk, just how far will Emika go to take down the man she loves?

Hi! I read the second book in the Warcross series this weekend; Wildcard. This book was very good, I didn’t get disappointed at all. First of all: I completly loved Hammie, she was so wonderful to know more about and I just fell in love with how she thinks. I mean, I wouldn’t dare play chess against her.

One of my other favorite characters was Tremaine, he was just unique and I really trusted him throughout the book. More about him will you find in my review with spoilers.

This book was intense, everything happened so fast and sometimes I didn’t understand what was going on. A lot happened and parts of it was hard to get. That was one of the few things I didn’t like about Wildcard.

The mind can make you believe whatever it wants you to believe.

Every problem has a solution. But after every solution, there’s a new problem to tackle, some new challenge to take on.

Review with spoilers

When Tremaine was shot and Emika thought he was dead, it felt very wrong. I didn’t know what to do, he was a big part of the book to me and reading it without him was unthinkable. I think one of the reasons it felt so wrong was because how he and Roshan obsiously hadn’t sorted out their past, they did mean a whole lot to each other but didn’t want to admit it. I wanted them to forgive each other or whatever they needed before Tremaine was allowed to leave the book.

Hideo was kinda hard to understand in this book, he was unpredictable. I was always on the watch when he was mentioned. It felt sad how he thought he was doing the right thing by trying to take over the entire world after his brother disappeared.

Favorite character: Tremaine

Original title: Wildcard

Release year: 2018

My rating: 4,25

Goodreads rating: 3,99

Hejsan!

Yay! I’m so happy that you liked this book! I agree though, it was very fast-paced and confusing at times, but I loved how it all worked out! I would have never predicted what happened to happen, if that makes sense. Great review! 😄
